Arthur Christmas (McAvoy) is the overlooked star of the Santa team, but when it looks like a small girl's present may not get delivered, he enlists the help of his curmudgeonly grandfather (Nighy). With characters boringly reflecting different degrees of niceness, this contrived family feud lacks the wit that made Aardman's name.

Metropolitan Opera: Florencia en el Amazonas

Metropolitan Opera: Florencia en el Amazonas
  • 2023
  • US

Sung in Spanish and inspired by the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez, Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s 1996 opera tells the enchanting story of a Brazilian opera diva who returns to her homeland to perform at the legendary opera house of Manaus—and to search for her lost lover, who has vanished into the jungle. The performance stars soprano Ailyn Pérez as Florencia Grimaldi, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to lead a spellbinding new production by Mary Zimmerman that brings the mysterious and magical realm of the Amazon to the Met stage. A distinguished ensemble of artists portray the diva’s fellow travelers on the river boat to Manaus, including soprano Gabriella Reyes as the journalist Rosalba, bass-baritone Greer Grimsley as the ship’s captain, baritone Mattia Olivieri as his enigmatic first mate, tenor Mario Chang as the captain’s nephew Arcadio, and mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera and baritone Michael Chioldi as the feuding couple Paula and Álvaro.

The Peasants
Poland 2023, 15, 114 mins, drama, adaptation

From the makers of Loving Vincent and using the same celebrated oil painted animation technique, The Peasants is a visually thrilling adaptation of 1924 Nobel Prize-winning novel by Wladyslaw Reymont (Poland) about a late 19th century Polish peasant woman who creates havoc by marrying an older rich man.

The visual style of The Peasants is based on Polish art from the late 19th and early 20th Century with an emphasis on works from the Young Poland movement by artists such as Josef Chelmonski, Ferdynand Ruszczyc and Leon Wyczolkowksi, most recently featured in the acclaimed exhibition at the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow.

Poland’s entry into the 2024 Academy Awards, The Peasants is a rich embodiment of Polish culture at the time - the music, the dance scenes, the countryside & artistic references.

A working-class photographer captures the impact of Thatcherism on the north of England but is unable toescape the poverty and inequality she exposed.

Driven by a commitment to document the impact of deindustrialisation on working-class communities in Northeast England in the 1970s and 1980s, Tish Murtha used her camera to expose societal inequality. She felt she had an obligation to the people and problems within her local environment and that documentary photography could highlight and challenge the social disadvantages that she had suffered. However, despite early acclaim for her work, she was unable to make a living from photography and died in poverty.

The film is a journey of exploration for Ella Murtha as both daughter and custodian of the Tish Murtha archive, a chance to elevate and preserve a legacy that has been lost and to tell the story of an artist and woman.
