  • Written by: James Cameron
  • Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, Giovanni Ribisi

Set in 2154, Cameron's much-hyped Avatar focuses on a paraplegic marine named Jake Sully (Worthington), who arrives on the distant moon of Pandora with a mission to help displace its indigenous population. But, after winning their trust, Jake finds his allegiances gradually shifting. High on technical flair but short on storytelling ambition, this visually stunning sci-fi epic sadly remains deeply flawed.

Legendary Canadian auteur David Cronenberg makes a triumphant return to cinemas with another mind (and flesh) bending vision of the future, reuniting with leading man Viggo Mortensen.

As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Mortensen) - celebrity performance artist - publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed. Their mission? To use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.

James Bond (Craig) comes up against a global crime syndicate, while back at home, the 00 programme is under threat from reckless moderniser C (Scott). With its swagger, dry humour and frequent, well-executed action it's a solid crowdpleaser, but the story is predictable, the characterisation is thin and overall it lacks the emotional depth of Skyfall.

  • Written by: Quentin Tarantino
  • Cast: Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Vivica A Fox, Daryl Hannah, David Carradine, Michael Madsen, Julie Dreyfus

A long time in the coming, Tarantino's two-part martial arts sword fighting epic gets off to a roaring rampaging start with Vol 1. Tarantino wears those influences on his sleeves: Chinese/Japanese martial arts flicks, blaxploitation and anime. Something of a departure from his previous films in that there is no smart era-defining dialogue here, just glorious, bloody, driven narrative. A must for anyone with a passion for the left field, low budget joys of people like Argento, Jodorowsky and any of the directors who came out of the Shaw Brothers studios in the 70s.
