The Exorcist (Director's Cut)

The Exorcist
  • 1973 (2000)

  • 2h 12min
  • 18
  • Directed by: William Friedkin
  • Cast: Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb, Kitty Winn, Jack MacGowran, Jason Miller, Linda Blair

Writer William Peter Blatty always griped that, in excising twenty minutes from The Exorcist, Friedkin removed its moral centre and obscured its theological message. To Blatty's horror, some people thought the Devil won. Friedkin has reinstated eleven minutes of footage, and the re-editing job is done so lovingly that fans are unlikely to feel cynically exploited. Even so, Friedkin's cuts have mostly been vindicated but it now feels too long, while the infamous 'spider walk' scene merely adds a cheap and redundant shock.

Four lifelong friends travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival and rediscover their wild sides. The fact that peeing on a crowd of partygoers is depicted as a show of female solidarity and mega dance-offs are the way to recover from hallucinogenic absinthe freak-outs makes this an indecently refreshing tonic of a film.

James Norton (Happy Valley, Grantchester) stars in the theatrical event as visionary director Ivo van Hove (A View from the Bridge) stages the English language premiere of A Little Life. Filmed live at the Savoy Theatre, London, during its West End run, this record-breaking and ‘beautifully acted’ production of the million-copy bestseller by Hanya Yanagihara comes to the big screen for a limited time only.

As ambition, addiction, and pride threaten to pull the group apart, they always find themselves bound by their love for Jude and the mysteries of his past. • 3h 30min

  • Directed by: Peter Jackson
  • Cast: Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen, Christopher Lee

A remarkable end to a remarkable series of films, the journey of Frodo, Sam and Gollum is the pièce de résistance of the trilogy. The tension-filled journey forces both Gollum and Sam to show their true colours as Frodo suffers under the burden of the ring. All around is war as Aragorn fights to reclaim what is rightfully his. Jackson's vision is awesome. The Return of the King is some kind of beautiful, some kind of masterpiece. Unmissable.
