Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World

Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World
  • 2023
  • 2h 43min
  • 18
  • Directed by: Radu Jude
  • Cast: Ilinca Manolache, Nina Hoss, Katia Pascariu, Sofia Nicolaescu, Uwe Boll, László Miske, Ovidiu Pîrsan, Dorina Lazar, Alex M. Dascalu

From Radu Jude, Romanian filmmaker and director of the Berlinale-winning Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (2021) comes this “dizzying, dazzling feat of social critique, an all-fronts-at-once attack on the zeitgeist, and a mischievous, often hilarious work of art about the artifice of work” (Variety), which won Jude the Special Jury Prize at Locarno Film Festival. In his latest film, Jude again explodes conventional boundaries of narrative and form, this time charting a lacerating course through one day in the life of a severely overworked film production assistant, Angela, who drives around Bucharest on her latest gig: filming work accident victims auditioning to be in a safety equipment video for a German multinational corporation.

At the same time, the sleep-deprived Angela upkeeps her own side project—a face-filtered, trash-talking, right-wing alter ego with more than 20,000 viewers that serves as the film’s perverse Greek chorus.

Intercutting all this with footage from Romanian director Lucian Bratu’s feminist 1981 film Angela Moves On, following the travels of a female cab driver around the city’s same sights and locations, Jude initiates a conversation with his country’s past and present, while engaging in a meta-commentary about the ability of the captured image to exploit, and to contort the truth.

Masculinity is in a mess and consumerism is to blame. Men have become docile spectators of life according to Fight Club, Fincher's controversial adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel. In reckless response to this late 20th century malaise, Norton's compliant spectator teams up with Pitt's mischievous Tyler Durden to form an arena for men to beat each other to a pulp and thus reconnect with the world. It's hit and miss, but enough of the punches connect.

From Dusk Till Dawn
  • 1996
  • US
  • 1h 48min
  • 18
  • Directed by: Robert Rodriguez
  • Cast: Harvey Keitel, George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Juliette Lewis

For its first third, this Tarantino-scripted movie is a suspenseful kidnap thriller as two killers on the run (Clooney and Tarantino) hole up with three hostages in a Mexican strip club. Then the tone changes into an sfx-heavy vampire western as the clientele spring fangs. Repetition abounds in a messy, tedious affair that's neither scary nor funny.
