Anselem (PG)

Dir. Wim Wenders
2023 | 93 mins | Germany
German
Anselm Kiefer, Daniel Kiefer, Anton Wenders

Showing times:

An experience like no other, renowned director Wim Wenders creates an expressive portrait of one of the world’s most prominent and important contemporary artists, Anselm Kiefer. Having played as a Special Screening at Cannes 2023, Anselm is Wenders’ second foray into 3D filmmaking since the groundbreaking Pina (2011).

Anselm treats the audience to an exclusive, front row seat to watch the artist at work. Mining cultural texts and Kiefer’s personal history, the film contextualises his life’s work, while taking the audience on an experiential voyage of discovery. Textual pleasures become vivid before our eyes, as we watch Kiefer roam through his enormous warehouse filled with his art, and the objects he uses to make it. We watch as he creates his monumental artworks using lead, concrete, glass, textiles, plant material, books and fire.

For over two years, Wenders traced Kiefer’s path from his native Germany to his current home in France, connecting the stages of his life to the essential places of his phenomenal career that spans more than five decades. The result is a profound study of the artist’s work, which explores human existence and the cyclical nature of history, inspired by literature, poetry, philosophy, science, mythology and religion.

Magic, Secrecy And Revelation - Brian Rappert

The Phoenix’s conjuror-in-residence, Professor Brian Rappert, is back for a new round of shows that use entertainment magic to ask questions about how we experience the world. “Magic, Secrecy and Revelation” offers a celebration and a re-imagination of social life through examining the role of secrecy and disclosure in our interactions and the vexed status of our abiding notions of what’s really real. In this highly interactive small group session, some of the magic will take place in your very hands!

All the performance’s payment from ticket sales for these events will be split between Refugee Support Devon & Exeter Foodbank.

A budding childhood romance between Nora and Hae Sung, classmates at a primary school in Seoul, ends abruptly when Nora’s family emigrates to Canada. Twelve years later, Nora - now a playwriting student in New York - notices that Hae Sung’s been searching social media for her. They reconnect online and even imagine a reunion. But another dozen years pass before they finally meet during his visit to New York. Although their lives have changed dramatically, they remain bound by a wistful connection.

An aching, deeply romantic debut feature from playwright Celine Song, Past Lives is a love story told across three moments in time. Song’s artful aesthetic and profound character writing, and the spellbinding performances she draws from Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro (whose fates intertwine) explore love, identity, and ‘In Yun’, a Korean notion of fate stemming from two people’s connection in a past life.

Steampunk Yule Ball: Where The Wild Things Are

Steampunk Yule Ball: Where the Wild Things Are

There is something lurking in ethereal undergrowth … a flash of scales or is it fur? A whining-barking-bleating. Its a wild thing and it is getting ready for the best party of the year - The Steampunk Yule Ball 2023. And this year we encourage you to unleash your own inner wild thing. It could be animal, beast or mythical creature. Perhaps you have an inner dragon… or fancy yourself as a rainbow unicorn; Is there a wild warrior Faery inside you or perhaps a wonky wildebeest; A grumpy bear or a Pussycat longing to be loved. All are welcome here. And what a party we have in store for you!

Hot off his World tour with the one and only Sparks its the phenomenal chap hop beast himself Mr. B - The Gentleman Rhymer (back for another Yule Ball). Mr B has been described as a cross between David Niven and Scroobius Pip, he is gloriously moustachioed, sharply suited and always with banjolele in hand. He has garnered millions of views on YouTube and his media appearances have included Rapping for Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight, playing live on BBC Radio One for Rob Da Bank, Nick Grimshaw and Scott Mills, on Radio Two for Claudia Winkleman and Steve Lamacq, 6Music for Tom Robinson and Shaun Keaveny and for Zoe Ball on Sky Arts.

And if that wasn't enough… We will be welcomed to the Court of Queen Mab. Her witchery will descend, ushering in a phantasmagorical feast for the senses as this musical monarch takes to our stage. Queen Mab is an irreverent yet commanding, escapist, ethereal, alluring, slightly unhinged… Fun, but with an undeniable darker streak. She conjures a heady witches' brew of wildly eclectic influences – a pinch of trip-hop here, a dash of breakbeat there, a healthy dollop of funk, a drizzle of folk, and lashings of R&B, soul, and jazz. Ostensibly, it’s theatrical art-pop that ran away with the circus and woke up in a field somewhere… And with its sense of dramatic flair, witty lyricism, musical kudos, and banging beats, it may also prove to be the stuff of legend.

And if things couldn't get any wilder, we have the one and only Festival favourites - The Sweetchunks Band. Sweetchunks are an unusual, yet compelling amalgamation of parodic folk, rock, chap-hop and drinking anthems, fused into a Steampunk horse-carriage of farcical and anecdotal comedy. These beasts are the original wild things so who better to entertain us this year.

We also have one very special mystery performer who is known to harness an army of Monkeys, and leave audiences in an awestruck wave of power, energy and sweat. We will announce this artist closer to the date so watch this space. We all like a special surprise, right?

Leading the ceremonies is Her wildness Fey Pink

Taking over the bar we have the unparalleled Beat Circus featuring a host of DJs including Victor Vector, Bearkat & TYGZ. Bringing us their funky Animalistic beats!

A working-class photographer captures the impact of Thatcherism on the north of England but is unable toescape the poverty and inequality she exposed.

Driven by a commitment to document the impact of deindustrialisation on working-class communities in Northeast England in the 1970s and 1980s, Tish Murtha used her camera to expose societal inequality. She felt she had an obligation to the people and problems within her local environment and that documentary photography could highlight and challenge the social disadvantages that she had suffered. However, despite early acclaim for her work, she was unable to make a living from photography and died in poverty.

The film is a journey of exploration for Ella Murtha as both daughter and custodian of the Tish Murtha archive, a chance to elevate and preserve a legacy that has been lost and to tell the story of an artist and woman.

  • Directed by: Lila Avilés
  • Cast: Naíma Sentíes, Montserrat Marañon, Marisol Gasé

In her second film after The Chambermaid in 2018, Mexican filmmaker Lila Avilés leaves behind the cramped hotel rooms of her debut but continues to work on the connection between relationships and interior spaces.

…a parade of wonderful human beings who are stronger together.

This time, the setting is a large house where, over the course of a long day, family and friends meet for a dual ritual: it is the birthday of young father and painter Tona, but as it will likely be his last, it is also a farewell ceremony. There is duality in the film’s soul, too, with the frenzy of preparations and the spontaneity of the celebration concealing the profoundly archaic and spiritual dimension of the title. Tona’s weakened body is initially invisible, protected in a room where he tries to summon up the strength required for the humanist ceremony in which he will be showered with all the love and affection needed to face his final journey.

Like the character of the bonsai-loving patriarch, Avilés takes meticulous care in shaping her own miniature, bending trajectories and feelings, pruning all frills and excess. A film that prepares for loss, Tótem amasses signs and forms of life: animals, insects, plants and a parade of wonderful human beings who are stronger together.
