Tony Richardson directs this meditation on the poor state of the British Army’s leadership during the Crimean War of the 1850s, as witnessed by David Hemmings’ comparably competent officer Captain Louis Nolan, leading to the tumultuous battle of Balaclava that climaxed with the heroic, but catastrophic charge made by the British Light Brigade against a Russian artillery battery. Richardson’s satirical picture casts an unforgiving eye over the disastrous decision-making of magniloquent bluebloods and inept generals like Trevor Howard’s Lord Cardigan, whose blind fanaticism and ill treatment of his men leads to near-tragedy.
