In 1837, whilst visiting the house of one of his patients, Charles Bovary, a rural Normandy physician falls for Emma, the daughter of the rich farmer Rouault. Two months later, the farmer, who is aware of the widowed doctor’s wishes to start afresh, offers his daughter’s hand in marriage. Emma, who dreamed of a life of pleasure and luxuries, grows bored of her life and begins an affair with Leon Dupuis, a clerk whilst spending a fortune on jewels and expensive fabrics, running up a huge debt.
